May 18-27, 1980 - The Gwangju Uprising and massacre in south Korea.
The popular uprising in Gwangju happened in response to a military coup and the imposition of martial law and other oppressive measures by Chun Doo-hwan. During the uprising, people rose up and took control of the city for several days. The uprising was crushed by a brutal massacre by the south Korean army, which the U.S. government gave the go-ahead for and supported. Estimates are that at least 1,000 people were killed and over 1,000 were arrested. The U.S. support for Chun and for the repression at Gwangju turned many young Koreans against the U.S. presence in south Korea. Read more about the U.S. role here.

Extremely important event, on par with the Paris Commune.

This post is bothering me.
A lot.
Because it’s so decontextualized and stripped of both social and historical context just so it can fit into a socialist/anti-US imperialism narrative, and while I agree that there are many aspects of the 5.18 massacre which can be used to talk about those things, I’m also very uncomfortable with how this post lacks so much context of the situation.
And it’s not like the context which is not talked about goes against these narratives. Like you can’t talk about the 5.18 situation without talking about the east west political divide and regional sociopolitical struggles which is a very potent critique of liberal democracy.
Nor can you speak about the 5.18 situation without discussing the materialistic conditions of Korea and the reign of Park Chunghwee who preceded Chun, but who’s presidency was also marked by brutality, violence, and martial law, which this post paints as starting from Chun when in actuality Park is very much as guilty as Chun for implementation of martial law.
You also can’t speak about the 5.18 situation without discussing the various cold war era conflicts and tensions created by US imperialism and was utilized to justify actions like this by painting protestors as pro-North Korean spies or sympathizers and how this still goes on today.
Like there’s so much that this post is lacking when it comes to an accurate and effective discussion of the 5.18 massacre and the lack of context bothers me so much.

One day, around the world - not a single student at any academic institution, other than those in the music program, will be found playing an acoustic guitar around campus.
And on that day.

The only place on the Internet where I feel comfortable telling everyone about the GINORMOUS shit I am taking at this very moment is tumblr. Thank you.

I just walked out on my moms Mother’s Day dinner. I feel bad; not only because I just walked out, but because I was rarely given a true chance to speak. And if I was given that chance; I was laughed at, not taken seriously, or blatantly cut off it ignored. I can’t help that I don’t like taking shit from people when it isn’t justified.
